Hamtramck Explorer

Hamtramck Explorer is a collaborative digital deep mapping initiative that brings the stories of Hamtramck’s past and present into focus. Spearheaded by Wayne State University and Michigan Technological University, the project combines innovative mapping technology with historical research to create an interactive, GPS-based platform. Visitors can explore the city street by street, uncovering historical photographs, archival documents, archaeological finds, and oral histories tied to specific locations. From its early settlement days to its role as a hub for successive waves of immigrants, Hamtramck’s layered history comes alive in a new, immersive way.

The Hamtramck Historical Museum and the Ukrainian American Archives and Museum are proud collaborators in this effort, contributing research, artifacts, and stories that reflect the city’s remarkable diversity. Together, the museums preserve and share the heritage of communities that have shaped Hamtramck’s identity for over a century, from historic churches and businesses to neighborhood landmarks and community celebrations.

By weaving together diverse community perspectives and historical sources, Hamtramck Explorer transforms the city into a living museum—one where residents, researchers, and visitors can walk the streets and discover the heritage hidden in plain sight.
