WSU & HAMTRAMCK HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Archaeological Dig

UAAM along with the Hamtramck Historical Museum is partnering with Wayne State University Department of Anthropology in their classroom project to explore and excavate at the site of the first Ukrainian Byzantine rite Catholic parish (Immaculate Conception) in Hamtramck, Michigan. Located at 2317 Grayling from 1913-1967 this wooden church and bell tower were at the heart of the growing Ukrainian immigrant community on that same street.

Beginning on September 9 through ten weeks of excavation activities, Dr. Krysta Ryzewski and her 20 students will be working to uncover architectural and site history on this now empty lot. Bishop Barnes of International Beginnings Ministries, as the current property owner, graciously allowed WSU access to the land to conduct this project. Our museum and archives, as a repository of local Ukrainian American immigrant history in Southeast Michigan, has worked to provide historical timelines of the origins of this first parish as well as photographs and has translated local immigration histories. These are referenced and are used as resources for the WSU team. A special note: this is the first archaeological excavation of a Ukrainian-American historical site being done in North America. Photos courtesy Krysta Ryzewski, Associate Professor of Anthropology at WSU

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Vyshyvanka Exhibit

UAAM was contacted by University of Michigan’s Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia to create an exhibit featuring historical and contemporary examples of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka (embroidery). Curated by our own textile consultant, Arnie Klein, the exhibit features traditional Ukrainian sorochky (chemise), rushnyky (ritual cloths) as well as contemporary adaptations of embroideries on decorative pillows, tablecloths and designs. The exhibit opened on September 5, 2024, during the Annual Reception. The exhibit is located at the WCEE Center | 500 Church Street | Ann Arbor on the 10 th floor which is open during WCEE events. IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival

The Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival (HNAF) highlights Hamtramck, Michigan, a creative, dense city of 2 square miles, and the artists and musicians who call it home. This isn't your typical festival: participating creators in the community host the audience in their home studios, front porches, parks, coffee shops, or galleries around the city. Traveling between these venues throughout Hamtramck, the audience curates their own experience. It’s a community-organized festival that allows anyone in the city and the surrounding neighborhood to contribute to or host an event. The HNAF embraces the idea that art is for everyone - all are welcome to participate, and all are welcome to tour the artists’ workspaces and attend the day (and night) long events.

FestivalGoers are encouraged to grab a bite to eat and visit our diverse shops and businesses while in Hamtramck - coffee shops and bakeries, fresh produce and spice markets abound, along with plentiful bars, thrift and gift shops, and cultural and community institutions.

In 2024, the festival is on Saturday, October 5 – remember, it’s an one day event. Each location on HNAF will be featured on this event page prior to the event! more info: https://www.hnaf.org/
