An artist of Tatar and Ukrainian descent, he graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute. In 1972, he and his brother escaped the Soviet Union to the United States after his father was killed and his mother imprisoned by Soviet authorities. His work spans graphics, oil painting, silkscreen, watercolor, repoussé reliefs, and mosaics.
